The kind that is up there with Carcass 'Necroticism Descanting the Insalubrious', At The Gates 'Slaughter of the Soul', Necrophagist 'Onset of Putrefaction', Suffocation 'Pierced from Within' and Iniquity's 'Five across the eyes', for sheer brilliant song writing, heaviness, melodies, the whole all round package.>

AVULSED from spain get two awards from me: at first the best coverartwork for this issue, the CD-title was tranformed into a pic in a great way. The second award is the biggest suprise of the issue. To be honest, I have not expected such a varied and great Death Metal-album from AVULSED. The first album was average in my eyes, the Death/Techno-experiment "Cybergore" was out of competition. "Stabwound Orgasm" shows that we have to count on this band. AVULSED play the way I like it, the traditional way. With dark growls, deep guitars and blasting drums. I can tell you two bands which I would like to compare two AVULSED-songs with: GRAVE ("You'll Never See...") and very old AMORPHIS. But this is only a small part of the AVULSED-CD, that contains different speed, good songwriting and fast blastbeats. Check it out if you tell yourself a Death Metal-fan!

Who still remember the old "Carnivoracity" EP, so effectively slammed down in second or third Brainstorm issue, which is hardly believed as AVULSED's release, if you check "Stabwound Orgasm". Admitedly Spanish Death Metal revivalists have improved a great deal since then, and they are worth a best-progressed-deathmetal-band-through-entire-carreer award, or something of that sort. Evolution has marked every new AVULSED release with something modern and probably dark sullen melody is the most noticeable thing that was developped with years, that added the heavy brilliance to this brutal band. It is a perfect equilibrium between tradition and progress. They are as progressive as their style lets them be, in other words. Does anyone name DEMIGOD mighty album as progressive Death Metal? No. Neither is AVULSED. From first till last second they show the roots of Death, bowing actually to that wave of 90-ies bands, who take care on melody as well. Truly dark, extreme, aggressive riffing, and no pseudomelodic life metal. I tell you - "Stabwound Orgasm" is a tribute to that 90-ies direction, that not many bands were heading back then! Once again I must mention the mighty DEMIGOD, as their main inspiration. But to tell the truth - I have never heard any single album with "Slumber of Sullen Eyes" spirit so much alive, and I eternally hail AVULSED for capturing that spirit back, on their own record! It was not that impressive on "Eminence In Putrescence", doubtlessly. Dave, damn, he has tuned down his voice to sound like Esa, hah, I cannot believe that. It is so much better than his old gargling standard growl, it is unbelievable. Surprisingly, I also find some resemblances with the BELIAL mini-CD "Wisdom of Darkness" here, in faster/blaster rhythm attacks, and when Dave uses that hellish dark scream here and there. Though who really cares about old BELIAL these days_ Nah, you must experience how Death Metal history is revived, and how it must have been performed. Top-notch purchase! Satisfaction guaranted! Since 1992, AVULSED has built its identity through Death Metal music. Today, AVULSED means respect, ‘cos this band has shared the stage with the best Metal acts worldwide: INCANTATION, NAPALM DEATH, CRADLE OF FILFTH, SIX FEET UNDER, ...Thier first album, released in 96 («Eminence in Putresence») has been out after several EP’s. It shows a very mature & brutal band. It has been followed in 98 by a remixes album: «Cybergore», which stays as the best Techno Death Metal album ever released. «Stabwound Orgasm» is only their second album, but it’s piece of evidence to say that AVULSED is now a major act into the Death Metal scene. With a first class production (James Murphy mastered himself this album!), AVULSED shows in this album how Death Metal must be. Some could say that it’s old school Death Metal. Sure, but it’s the best way to play Death Metal. AVULSED features among the top level Death Metal band. Songs like «Blessed by Gore» must feature among the essential of Death Metal music.

Did you have a chance to listen to the album "Cybergore" released last year? If not - you were lucky to preserve the faith in positive sides of homo sapiens' nature because I doubt you would have readily accepted this disco-experiment. It seems to me, only the very band-members were satisfied with this CD, having followed FEAR FACTORY's steps in remixing brutal death metal to the swinish condition (I mean techno-dance). After such a terrible blunder the excellent Spanish band, of course, needed to protect its reputation by producing a heap of grinding gore-brutal stuff murderous enough to dislocate elbow joints and to blacken one's enamel. "If you wanted it, you got it"- that's what AVULSED meant starting their devastating machine. Where more energetic people begin their super-high-speed firing, the Spanish gentlemen prefer to slay at a slow and more gentle pace; where most of the voicemen bellow or gurgle something inarticulate, Dave Rotten baritones in a distinguished and quite understandable way. AVULSED seem to be cherishing old-school-death metal tradition and that presents a certain contrast to the fashionable hyperbrutal turns. Special thanx for the cover (you'll find its story in the interview with Dave...p.76) Viva Spain and... No pasaran!

The second album from the spanish guys from AVULSED recorded after almost a 3 year break after their full-length debut album ‘’Eminence in Putrescence" consistently brings us a portion of a really good Death metal muse. The album recorded at the Spacelab Studios (in Germany) and Mixed in the Sound Temple Studios in San Francisco owned by James Murphy just has to be loved by those who love extreme music. All riffs are well-thougt-out from the beginning till the very end and are writen that way that noboby will feel dissapointed or bored. The other element of this album which cannot make you bored are those ingenious melodic parts very good brought in the extreme sound which seem almost as an art of music. The intro itself is telling us that we deal with something special, directing us rather on listening not so extreme music. But don’t de deceived by it, it’s just a small prelude/introduction before the main masterpiece full of great guitar passages and solos placed there where they are really needed. Guitar parts are not too complexed taking into consideration a minimalistic rule rather than barocque excess, they are modest but sometimes even too expresive. One can feel the spirit of the early works of Mr. Shuldiner & Co. Another spiritual presence one can feel is the circulating ghost of AMORPHIS (specially the intro) but particularly their ‘’The Priviledge Of Evil" EP, which one can feel in those guitar solos, guitar sound and in the passages. In spite of all those comparisons you can easily say that the sound of AVULSED is very fresh and unique. Very deep growling of Dave Rotten arms the music in a really big portion of emotions, which can make one go deaf & which crush everything what stands in their way like a humongous monstrosity without even one small act of mercy.
But ‘’Stabwound Orgasm" isn’t just a Death Metal album, for one can find here many elements from different genres of music & many different inspirations. All the little sounds in the background (but not only) fit just ideal with the crushing growling vocals & ingenious guitars what all together makes a HELL of a record. The backgroung guitars, which sometimes sound only half their way, introduce another dimensions to the album, they introduce an atmosphere of anxiety & depression to the violent & agressive surface. Another element which has to be notified is the keyboard elements/sound which appear only at the end and ‘’lasts" for 3 tracks, but still they they don’t weaken the weight of this album but they deepen the atmosphere and their presence upgrade the artistic virtues of this album not only not strenghening the the musical part but also the lyrical side. One have to admit that the newest album of AVULSED is a fully well-thought-out masterpiece, possesing a very fresh sound, a great amount of emotions, which are expressed in a very interesting and unique way. Next comparisons with the Death Metal giants only ennoble the sound and the whole crew and not dethroning them. This is an album not only for those who like extreme sounds but also for those who seek for bands which create unique albums & rational tracks.

Lets’s face it, AVULSED is the band of Repulse’s owner dave Rotten which might influence some reviewers and make readers hesitate when reading rave reviews. BUT… but without willing to lick any ass, I tell you, this album fuckin’ rules. Imagine something between CANNIBAL CORPSE and DEATH with some BOLT THROWER (« Death By Gore »)in it. Brutality, deep, low grunts and superb, exciting guitar work. « Compulsive Hater » also reminds AMORPHIS’ most vicious work (« Land Of The Thousand Lakes ») times ten ! Variation and technique make this « Stabwound Orgasm » a must-have ! -s-

Wow, the opening instrumental, "Amidst the Macabre," is so melody-oriented that it really took me aback. This really had me thinking that AVULSED would be the band to combine Gore/Death and Melody. I mean, you know it's going to happen sooner or later, and I think it's happening sooner rather than later, gentle reader. What AVULSED have done on "Stabwound Orgasm" is combine the "brutal" riffs of Grindcore and Death with strong melody lines and leads; I, for one, applaud the effort. "Eminence in Putrescence" contains a reoccurring melody lead that could have been an IRON MAIDEN creation, and I can't think of a Gore/Death band that has ever taken the 'MAIDEN-esque sound and blended it so well with the CANNIBAL CORPSE style of brutality as AVULSED have down here, Unfortunately, vocalist Dave Rotten is making no such conversion here, as he is putting on his best Chris Barnes impersonation. This really raises my ire! Why do bands continue to blatantly plagiarize this man? I've always been of the opinion that the vocals were the weak link in CANNIBAL CORPSE's assault. It truly baffles me why bands still go out of their way to imitate those terrible guttural sounds that Mr. Barnes has always belched forth. OK, enough word-spew on the vocals and onto the cover art. Featuring a pair of naked, well-endowed women stabbing themselves (one directly in the throat!), this cover is meant for pure shock factor alone. Now, I seldom buy into such ploys, but (grinning like a small boy who just found his daddy's Playboys) I really dig this one (damn, just when I thought I was becoming an adult. oh well). Gore sells and you should be buying....

I had some complaints when it came to AVULSED's first album "Eminence in Putrescence" from 1996. I did not think the sound was brutal enough compared to the music. After having lived it for some years I've come to realise that the music wasn't that great either. The record is simply not as good as I at first thought. All this is water under a bridge. The new album "Stabwound Orgasm" is not suffering from any of the problems I experienced the debut had. This time the music is ten folded tighter and the production is as tight as a latex costume. AVULSED keep treading already ploughed tracks. They refuse to let go of their brutal Death Metal. Something they should be applauded for. When it is as good as "Stabwound Orgasm" there's no reason to apologise.
All there is to do is to plough forward, or in the case of AVULSED, maim everything that gets in their way. Despite the music being brutal it isn't non-melodic. You do not have to look for the melodies. They are right in front of you all the time. This is one big reason why "Stabwound Orgasm" works so well. The collision between the brutal and the melodic. This was one of the things I missed from their debut album. I had not very high hopes for "Stabwound Orgasm". The re-mix record "Cybergore" hardly helped building any high hopes and with the debut fresh in memory there were all the reason for a disappointment. "Stabwound Orgasm" proved that I was wrong in assuming the worst. AVULSED ran me over like a horde of stampeding Elephants.

The spanish AVULSED deliver the heavy 'european sounding' Death Metal, but still owe something to some american Death Metal pioners. Midtempo music here also, but with great mix of catchy melodies (not overloaded with 'em) & right kind of heaviness, makes the overall sound of the band more than great. The ten actual songs are very memorable, which is quite achievement when considering that the american influence is mostly in the technical side of the music, with influences from early Morbid Angel and, um, mid-era Death. Should please the Death Metal fans in both side of the Atlantic, and beyond. If it's still hard to figure out, imagine Amorphis meets Rotting Christ with Death's spiritual healing lp as background...

Hey Dave, I just got Stabwound Orgasm and checked it out,and it fucking slays man. the production totally kicks ass. I'd have to say amidst the macabre, homeless necrophile, exercismo vaginal and anthro-pet-phagus are my favorite songs. the guitar work is awesome. its insanely heavy and yet it has some killer melodic leads. Its cool to hear a band that doesn't rely on blast beats to be totally brutal. The vocals are fucking wicked dude, your use of mid range and low growls are a combo that always slays. Those kinds of combos always makes it sound even more brutal. this CD was definatly worth the wait. I'm looking forward to seeing you guys live someday. that hidden track is pretty sweet too, and the cover art is pretty sick, and a good use of hot naked chicks.   thanks again Dave, later Cody!

Hallo dear people of AVULSED. What I heard on putting on Stabwound Orgasm was impossible to believe. The band seems to have progressed 100% compared to its previous works. The change (towards the better) is tremendous. It brings in mind the good moments found only in releases such as "Heartwork" by CARCASS or "Black Earth" by ARCH ENEMY, great riffs and combined with the extremely low-end vocals. The new release is an outstanding product. Without any intent of ass licking here, this release decimates every mediocre release of the Death Metal scene. Well done!!

After what was clearly a failed experiment with their previous release, "Cybergore", Spain’s finest Death Metal act return with an astonishing new effort. Recorded at the Spacelab and mastered by James Murphy at Temple Studios, and hence enhanced by a powerful sound, Avulsed’s material delivers the brutality that one would expect from a band obsessed with bloodstrewn lyrics with a dark type of melody, good leads, and a sense of catchiness (which, I have to say, does have a hidden, darkly Iberian feel to it, distinguishing it from northern bands). Everything in this album oozes quality, dedication, and care in producing a solid product, so Avulsed ought to be commended for their steadfastness in their pursuit of establishing a reputation for themselves, based on hard work, steady progress, and ultimately crushing Death Metal. You cannot go wrong with "Stabwound Orgasm".

From Spain comes the primal Death Metal band Avulsed, with a new CD titled "Stabwound Orgasm" [Repulse Records].  It is a finely tempered work, mixing raw rhythms, Middle Eastern flavored brutal guitars, and the intrinsic growls of Dave Rotten.  The guitar work of Cabra and Juancar is skillful and still raw, heavy slag. There are several great tracks.  One of the best is the sublime instrumental cut "Amidst The Macabre."  It is heavy, eclectic, and cool. Another is "Anthro-pet-phagus."  Other essential cuts include "Nice Rotting Eyes," "Skinless," and "Virtual Massacre."  Avulsed pushes esoteric to new levels of artistic brutality.  Overall, this opus is killer.  Death Metal fans won't be disappointed. AVULSED crushes... simple as that!  Farewell.

This album is the proof for what you can achieve in time by working really hard. They, also admit themselves, "Carnivoracity" was not good and was not even any promissing but after this "EP" the band got into a new direction and became a lot better. First they have released "Eminence In Putrescence" album which was not excellent but yet quite OK and now they are back with a class-A quality Death Metal record. Now the music is more melodic and the vocals are again ultra low gutturals though. To be honest some parts remind me a lot of Amorphis but as long as what I care is the quality of what I hear, this is not much important. Since they have recorded in Germany this time, sound is also flawless. Enis highly advise you to buy it.

One of my favorite European Death Metal bands has came back with their second album "Stawbound Orgasm" that is a materpiece in the Death Metal history. Just listen the intro "Amidst The Macabre" and your cannibal instict begin to feel the morbous pleasure of near feast of blood that begin withe track "Stawbound Orgasm" (very cool name) .The other songs are devastly Death Metal with te most pure AVULSED style. The voice of Dave Rotten is a perfect melody gore/death and a bit faster than from the last CD "Eminence In Putrescence". A fast and tense work on the drums by Furni, with a morbid melody in the work with the guitars by Cabra and Juancar. "Stawbound Orgasm" is brutally melody and lethal, themes like "Eminence In Putrescence" which carries the name of a previous CD, are the sample of it. (with a lot of melody Iron Maiden), Also, like the sample of assassin death with the theme "Vaginal Exorcism". What a perverted master piece of work AVULSED has realized, the production couldn't have been better, recorded in the Spacelab Studios of Germany and mastered by Jame Murphy, in San Francisco. Besides this album apart from the version of Repulse, has been edited by Deadly Art from Germany and formatted lp+7"ep and there is also a South American version realized by Sylphorium Records and it will also has two bonus track. On the other hand AVULSED will be realizing the America Stabwound Tour 2000 across Usa, México, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua & Costa Rica. Unfortunately the Colombian dates was cancelled.

Echhh, I'd like to be a knife plunging into a tempting bodies of girls on the cover of a new AVULSED effort. I'd even like to be this wound which been closed to their skin. Unfortunately I can only dream of it, nothing more I can do. Well at least I can get excited listening to the new album of a Spanish crew "Stabwound Orgasm". I dunno if it'd be ever possible cause in my modest opinion Dave Rotten band still cannot record a better record than the masterpiece debut album "Eminence...". I dunno I I should add to the band's discography the techno remixes which we were served with on "Cybergore" because with a real AVULSED style that album has nothing in common. One way or another now we got brand new band's effort this time totally Death Metal. But it's not that killer Death Metal music, which could massacre your ears like it was with the debut album. New material is definitely more varied and that means that beside brutal intensity we are offered with something more. "Something more" it's a simply saying - the melody. Of course it doesn't mean that AVULSED now is playing Bon Jovi cliché... but you know it's melody, know what I mean. In general I could say that Spaniards composed few very catchy songs, which with a little help from our imagination, can remind us the swedish patterns. Not all songs are like that, because we also have on this album typical AVULSED carnage, going though out all song, but some tracks just stay away from we have heard before on AVULSED records. I'm not gonna complain on the bit of melodies here and there but on the length of this CD - almost 60 minutes of noisy music - smashing my ears too much. Dave in the interview explains why is so, but his arguments don't convince me at all. Well I'd cut off like 15 minutes from this album and the I'd give this record 10 out of 10, but because it's too long points going down for 8... Anyway it's a strong album from one of the best spanish groups ever.
