Avulsed is to me one of the best examples of a band that started out rather slow but surely got themselves a status within the death metal world, and only by hard working over all the years. I can't say I know them from their demo-period, since I was too young to be hooked up at that time but I actually heard Avulsed from their demo and 7" so I heard all their stuff mostly in the same order as the die-hard fans from the early days did. These people are able to see a very nice and steady evolution throughout their whole discography, and it is very easy to say that this "Gorespattered Suicide" is the best the band released up till now, though they have put themselves in trouble to come up with a successor for every release. Of course there is not too much difference between the early work and this last work of art, the main thing that needs to be mentioned is that it just sounds better. They have been perfected their style to the max. Their style, for those who are still unfamiliar with the band, is a brilliant mixture of classic old school death metal, grindy riffs and some winks to other genres such as thrash and even folk. Well, don't take that 'folk'-aspect to seriously, they just have some background keyboards in some tracks that sound a little exotic and for instance an acoustic guitar part in the "Divine Wine"-song, which shows the bands Spanish roots I guess. But that is also directly the reason why this band doesn't sound like they are just 'one of those' death metal bands in a row of thousands, neither they are a band that is purely driven by blast beats. Not that I hate blast beats, on the contrary, but there is not much to gain for me when bands only try to be as technical and fast as possible. But the grindy etch and the low guttural vocals of underground icon Dave Rotten are still the trademarks for the band that will appeal a whole nation of metal heads, especially in these times where this kind of music gains popularity al the time. Actually they have been putting all the best from different genres into one album, they are brutal, they are grinding and they even didn't forget to throw in some melody for the variety - that gives it even a little Swedish twist to it - of course not the In Flames kind of modern shite, but more in the vein of Dismember. As a matter of fact they have been showing themselves a true metal band over the years that really has got something to offer. Avulsed proved that hard labour actually pays, besides playing a lot of big festivals like Obscene Extreme and Fuck The Commerce this year, a recently finished Japanese tour and an upcoming European tour with Grimness 69 will only underline this. To me this is just one hell of a great death metal album that just has everything that I like death metal for. And how can you better shut down an album than with a Motörhead? One of the best recognizable metaltracks of all time, "Ace Of Spades", in a total guttural death metal vein, funny of course and it leaves you mostly with a fresh and good feeling. Exactly, the feeling to push on the 'play'-button again. Re-play! Powered by MetalMania.net, "Your Gateway To Metal On The Web"
