Avulsed is a very original band inside the Death
Metal scene, they
possess influences from traditional Death, Splatter,
Grind and even traditional Heavy Metal (specially the
guitarists). They are on the road for 14 years already,
always releasing expressive albums with an absurd
brutality. Check out this interview with Dave Rotten.
1 - First of all, I'd like to mention
that it's a great honor to interview a band like
Avulsed. Please tell us a bit about the band's history.
Dave Rotten (v) - Thanx to you for the
opportunity of being featured in your cool webzine!!
Well, I think that after 14 years it's a little bit
boring to answer questions like this about the history
of the band, so since this is a webzine, it shouldn't be
any problem for any of the readers to check our complete
official biography directly here http://www.avulsed.com/band/biography/bioing.html
2 - The band just released
their 4th album Gorespattered Suicide through the
record label Metal Age Prod. Did the band not like the
work done by Avantgard Music (Italy) in your last album
Yearning for the Grotesque?
Dave - Absolutely not!! We were
totally dissatisfied with the work done by Avantgarde in
our album "Yearning…", so we immediately left them and
started to search for a new label. We had four offers
and Metal Age as the best option. So far they're doing
great for us and we're very hapy with the treatment,
promotion and distribution they're giving
us!!
3 - What led the band to
choose Metal Age instead of Xtreem Music, which you own?
Dave - Well, by the time we were looking for a
label, Xtreem Music was still young and there's no money
enough to have a band like Avulsed, so we opted for a
label that could pay our recording expenses as well as
having a good promotion and
distribution.
4 - Going back to a recent past,
Avulsed released a ''mix'' album, where you could find
Death Metal and "extreme" techno (forgive me but
considering techno to be extreme is ridiculous in my
opinion). You European guys sometimes make these wacky
musical experiences that has nothing to do with Metal,
in the opinion of a big portion of Metal fans here in
South America. After all, techno has nothing to do with
music, since the so called DJ's simply suck and copy
songs made by other artists. What does Cybergore
represent in Avulsed's career?
Dave - Haha!! Well, it's obvious that your
concept about Techno is not the same as us!! The
hardcore Techno is fucking extreme!! It can make your
hed exploding much more than any other musical style,
but well, if you don't like it, that's another story.
The thing is that we don't give a shit about other's
opinions. We don't like to be sheeps that follow and do
what everybody else does. If we would be like that, we
would never mix, melody and brutality. The
Cybergore CD was just an experiment, we wanted to
do, but it never meant any change in our music. Many
people love it, many other's don't, it's fine with
us.
5 - Spain certainly is in the route of
excellent shows, has a considerable scene, but when it
comes to bands, very few are worldwide known. You guys
are one of these few. Spain does not have good bands?
What happens there to explain the fact that Spanish
bands do not achieve the same respect as bands from
other countries in Europe?
Dave - Yes, we have many good bands, but the main
reason why they don't get any succeed it's because most of people don't
speak english and that's a big barrier for them to get
in touch with foreign labels and magazines. Also, nobody
wants to take their bands seriously enough to put their
time, money and efforts. It's the same as the record
labels. Xtreem Music is the only one with some success
outside of Spain because the others just take it as a
hobby and don't work very much outside.
6 - Let's get back to your new
album. After 14 years of band, I confess that just now I
met the sound brutality promoted by Avulsed. The band
practices an intense Death metal with Grind passages and
a sick Splatter thematic. It's even hard to ''label''
you guys as a Death, Grind or Splatter band, not to
mention your Heavy Metal influences (Juancar and Cabra
are great guitarists). What's the best definition for
the music Avulsed plays?
Dave - The best definition is
without any doubt: DEATH METAL!! We don't like to
imitate any certain band, we don't want to follow any
trend… we just play the music we like, which is Death
Metal. This music is rich enough to allow many different
elements, so we incorporate them without any fear. We
try to play Heavy and brutal music but at the
same time with melody and of course brutal
lyrics!!
7 - I visited the band's
website before making this interview, I saw that
Gorespatted Suicide has been receiving excellent
reviews around the world. I gave it a 10 myself for such
richness and originality in your Death/ Splatter/ Grind.
All this has been very positive for you,
correct?
Dave - Hey, thanx for the great review, we really
appreciate it!! We like to get reviews, no matter if
they're good or bad. Of course good reviews are cool,
but we also like to get bad reviews sometimes. You know,
it's difficult to play something that is enjoyed by
everybody, so if anyone don't like our music, we like to
see why. The only thing we want is to see reviews done
by somebody that know what he's talking about. Of
course, a bad review done by someone that doesn't like
this music, means nothing for
us…
8 - The band recently played
a few gigs in Japan. Tell us a bit about the Japanese
crowd. Did they act behaved as they watched your sound
devastation?
Dave -
We played two shows in Japan. One in Tokyo and other in
Kawasaki. Both shows were great, but specially the one
in Tokyo!! The crowd was crazy and they fucking enjoyed
our performance, so everything was
perfect!!
9 - Something called my attention: the
cover art of the releases. They reflect with fidelity
and brutality. Who made the cover for Gorespatted
Suicide?
Dave - Yeah, as I told you, our
brutal music has to deal with brutal lyrics and of
course with brotal covers!! We always try to get
shocking covers and this time I think we've got the most
brutal and explicit one. Sure we could have got an even
more explicit one, but we wanted to do it with somekind
of class. The album cover as done by Phlegeton, which is
the vocalist in Wormed and also drummer in Godus. He did
a really great job!!
10 - As I said before, Avulsed mixes three
extreme styles in their songs, and your vocal fits
perfectly all of them. How do you do it? What vocalists
inspire you?
Dave - Thanx, but as a proof that not everybody
sees the music in the same way, this is what I recently
found in a swedish webzine: "This is some really fucking
cool Death Metal. I'm not down with the
vocals, though. It's that style where it sounds like the
fucker is belching sperm for the length of the song. The
rest of the shit is killer." Also you can find things
like: "Second grade Death Metal that I could do without.
Weak production, weak drumming and weak riffs. But
atleast the vocals are low." Soooo.. well, you see that
people can see the music from very different points of
view, hehe!! Obviously I don't agree and these are the
kind of reviews I told you before… we don't give a shit,
because they come from people that shows they don't like
this. Normally people likes the voice, but the most
important thing is that we like it, haha. I think it
fits perfectly. Or is it somekind of pattern we should
follow?? Fuck patterns!! They're for sheeps without
brain!! I think my main inspiration comes from vocalists
of bands like Funebre, Rottrevore, Pyrexia, Demigod,
Grave, Necrophobic (demos), Crematory (SWE), God
Macabre.
11 -
How do
you conciliate your activities, as a vocalist and label
manager? Are you a magician?
Dave - Well, it's really stressing sometimes,
because I'm more and more busy every day and I work
every day!! I try to do both things the best way I can
but sometimes I can't. Take for example the delay in
answering this interview, hehe!! But well, he I am,
trying to do my best!!
12 - Avulsed took part in a Motorhead
Tribute, playing a cover for Ace of Spades, which
is also present in Gorespatted Suicide. If I m not mistaken, this
tribute is composed by Spanish bands only. Can you tell
us which bands are participating and which record label
released this CD?
Dave - The fact that we appeared on this tribute
was pure casualty!! Just when we finished the album, our
bass player met a guy that was looking for bands to do
this tribute and he told him about this one, so he heard
it and liked it!! There are mainly Metal and Rock bands
from Spain, perhaps the most wel-known ones are
Terroristars, Sonotones, Biokot, Coilbox, Sex Museum,
Habeas Corpus… It's a quite important label here in
Spain called El Diablo.
13 - I received an
email informing that Golgotha was back and that you''ll
be the one who will Record the vocals and play a few
gigs. An interesting experience, one they're a Doom
Metal band. What do you think about it? Do you like Doom
Metal?
Dave - Yeah, I like Doom Metal
since the early days of Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride,
Anathema, Winter. In fact I released the first
mini CD of Golgotha in '94, the 1st album in '95 and the
2nd album in '98. It's a band I've always liked very
much and since they reformed and didn't have a vocalist,
Vicente the guitarist and leader asked me if I could do
the vocals for this album. I recorded them in February
and the album will come out in June. You can actually
hear one song in the band's official site at http://www.golgotha.ws/
14 - Do you maintain contact with Brazilian
bands? Which ones?
Dave -
Not really… I was in touch with Edu from Tumba Records
long time ago and he was very enthusiastic about
Avulsed. He even wanted to bring us to play to Brazil,
but suddenly he seemed to ignore us and decided that we
weren't good enough for his interests. Apart of this, I
know many bands from Brazil, specially Krisiun with whom
I have a very friendly relationship. They even played
supporting us in Germany back in '97, haha!! And now
they're a big band!!
15 - Well Dave, the interview is over, now
I'd like you to explain the plans for the band's future
and leave a message for our
readers!
Dave - Thanx Jaime
for the interview, support and patience. You know I'm a
fucking busy bastard, hehe!! The next plans for Avulsed
are to play as many shows as we can and then an european
tour in September. After this we'll record a mini CD and
next year we'll do our 5th album to come out in late '06
or early '07. For anyone interested in Avulsed, please,
check out our official website at and remember…
DEATH METAL RULES!!
